Where is God?
"Where is God?" In the face of the sort of devastation we have seen over the past week in the nation of Haiti, to ask "Where is God?" is both reasonable and necessary. Where is God when disaster strikes? The extreme fundamentalists (e.g. Pat Robertson) say God was right there, wreaking havoc and seeking revenge for past sins. The atheists say God was never there in the first place, that we are totally alone. But what do we say?... we who place our faith and hope in a God of mercy, compassion, and love?
The following is a video created by Father Frank Logue, Vicar of King of Peace Episcopal Church in Kingsland, Georgia. I commend it to you as a thoughtful reflection on where God is to be found when humanity suffers. As it turns out, God is right there... not as one creating the suffering, but as one experiencing it with us. This is the literal meaning of the word "compassion," and it is the true meaning of the Cross of Christ.
