Why We Eat Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday
Shrove Tuesday is always the day before Ash Wednesday and falls between February 3 and March 9 each year, depending on the date for Easter. As Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a season of fasting and strict devotion for Christians, the night before Ash Wednesday became an occasion for enjoying one last feast. Some say Shrove Tuesday was cleverly invented to use up the ingredients that were given up for Lent - milk, butter and, particularly, eggs - which were not be eaten again until Easter. The word "Shrove" comes from the old English word "shriven," which meant the confession of one's sins.
