Holy Eucharist & Reading of the Passion
Today’s Liturgy begins outdoors with a liturgical reenactment of our Lord’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, where he was greeted with crowds waving palm branches. However, our cries of “Hosannah!” soon turn to shouts of “Crucify him!” as St. Luke’s Passion Narrative is read by several readers during the Eucharist. Today’s liturgy begins our week-long meditation on the events that changed history forever.

Stripping of the Altar
7-12 a.m. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Vigil before the Altar of Repose (Little St. Anne’s)
12 a.m. Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament
At the conclusion of the Eucharist, the Blessed Sacrament will be reserved at an “Altar of Repose,” which will be set up in Little St. Anne’s (the old church). A prayer vigil will be kept with our Lord present in the Blessed Sacrament. This vigil recalls our Lord’s own prayer vigil with his disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane before his arrest and trial. He asks of us, “Can you not watch one hour with me?”
After the Sacrament has been taken to the “Altar of Repose,” the main Altar and Sanctuary are stripped of all ornamentation, candlesticks, and other vesture. This moving liturgy reminds us of how our Lord’s body was stripped of his garments at the crucifixion.
A sign-up sheet for the prayer vigil (in twenty minute segments) is posted in the narthex. Please join in this deeply meaningful time of silence, prayer, and meditation as we keep watch with our Lord and experience his eternal, sacrificial love.
